What Scares You, Grows You !! (1 min read)

Comfort zones are cosy, but consider this - "When was the last time you did something that scared you?"

If you're drawing a blank, you're in good company! Yet potentially, you may have stopped growing.

Comfort zones trap us in a cosy bubble. It is a safe behavioural space where stress and risk are minimised, but it's also where dreams disappear forever.  There is no challenge, no learning, no growth, and we certainly don't discover our true potential. In essence, comfort becomes our biggest roadblock.

Research-backed studies encourage discomfort[1].  Intentional stretching beyond a safe space increases persistence and courage. It promotes overall development and helps rewire our brains. Discomfort creates fresh neural pathways by enhancing cognitive flexibility and creativity. It is not just character-building but brain-building as well!

However, being uncomfortable isn't about constant stress but a gradual expansion of boundaries to build resilience. In doing things that scare us, we prove to ourselves that we are capable of more.

Pause for a moment to consider - where have you become too comfortable, and how can you challenge yourself in this area?

The Good news is that we don't need radical moves.

Find something outside your comfort zone, do it in the next seven days and reflect briefly.

Small Steps, Big Changes

Here are some ways to tiptoe out of our hideouts:

1. Try that exotic dish you've always been curious about.

2. Strike up a conversation with a stranger.

3. Take a different route to work.

4. Hone a new skill.

5. Voice your opinion at the next meeting.

6. Give up one luxury.

Taking that first step is crucial for expanding consciousness and embracing the thrill of growth!

"Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new." - Brian Tracy-

Nice thought! We feel the need to move out of our comfort zone, but only a few dates. And the one who dares most often embraces success.

True that when you don't come out of your comfort zone, you miss out a lot in life. we must inculcate those few small steps and transition into large leaps for a more satisfying life

Nice write up. I do agree that taking up challenges increases one's boundaries. No doubt it is out of someone's comfort zone but it reveals our inner strength and capacity.

I've been planning to learn how to drive at 50, but the chaotic Kolkata traffic scares me. Do you think I should enroll in the para driving school?

Nothing grows in the comfort zone

It is very true. Venturing outside your comfort zone and experiencing new things brings growth to oneself. But it is also possible to experience new things within our comfort zone too. A lot of times we don’t even experience within our comfort zone. Reach in to reach out.
